Harvard University Association of Alumni in Singapore (1)
Dear Members and Alumni,

First and foremost - best wishes to everyone this New Year of the Tiger! I will refrain from making bad jokes and puns about the “roarin’”… but I do hope, yet again (perhaps I sound a bit like a broken record) - that we will finally be seeing some return to normalcy in the world in terms of human interaction, with moderated societal and government restrictive measures (not to be interpreted as a criticism).

For us at HUAAS, it is also again that time of year, when we would like to draw your attention to the AGM - on March 24, 2022. We will be holding the AGM again virtually this year, and hope still to have a 2022 Annual Dinner event but likely at a later date.

For those who are interested in running for a committee position or nominating someone for a position, these nominations will CLOSE by midnight SGT on February 28, 2022. Please submit your interest here. To run for the election, you must be a Harvard alumni and a fully paid-up member of HUAAS (as of February 19, 2022).

The following positions are up for election: Vice President, Treasurer, and 2 at-large Committee members.

The submissions will then be reviewed by the Nominating Committee and you will be contacted by them shortly after.

Voting will take place March 16-23 and the results will be announced at the AGM.

Otherwise, there are a few key faculty events over the next few weeks: a conversation with President S. Lawrence Bacow on February 23, as well as a discussion with Professor Jason Ur, the Stephen Phillips Professor of Archaeology. We have jointly sponsored an event with HBS Professor Ranjay Gulati with Piyush Gupta, CEO of DBS Bank on February 17.

Take care,

Rebecca
President, HUAAS

Join HBS Professor Ranjay Gulati with Piyush Gupta, CEO of DBS Bank to learn more about the secrets and stories of leaders on the edge.

Harvard Business School’s Ranjay Gulati sits down with extraordinary leaders of companies from around the world to discuss their stories of bravery and boldness under pressure. How have they dared to push beyond market pressures and serve a higher, more inclusive purpose? What life experiences have enabled such gutsiness and what lessons do they have for the rest of us? How do they inspire their teams and organizations to become courageous and more purposeful too?

This session will feature Piyush Gupta, CEO and Director of DBS Group. If interested, please RSVP here

This event is jointly sponsored by HUAAS and several Harvard Alumni Clubs in Asia.

Feb 23 - Spy satellite programs and what we have learned from them - Asia and Mid-East case studies” - featuring Dr Jason Ur

Jason Ur is Stephen Phillips Professor of Archaeology and Ethnology in the Department of Anthropology at Harvard University. He specializes in early urbanism, landscape archaeology, and remote sensing, particularly the use of declassified US intelligence imagery. He has directed field surveys in Syria, Iraq, Turkey, and Iran. He is the author of Urbanism and Cultural Landscapes in Northeastern Syria: The Tell Hamoukar Survey, 1999-2001 (2010). Since 2012, he has directed the Erbil Plain Archaeological Survey, an archaeological survey in the Kurdistan Region of northern Iraq. He is also preparing a history of Mesopotamian cities.

I (Rebecca) have seen from Prof Ur some spy satellite images overlaid over Singapore from the 1960’s - it is amazing how the city has expanded! The usage pf modern spy satellite imagery is fascinating and can be used from so many different facets.

His personal academic website is https://scholar.harvard.edu/jasonur, and he does academic tweeting at @jasonalikur.

This promises to be a stimulating discussion that is perhaps beyond our usual fare! The event is on February 23rd at 9am (SG TIme). Please sign up by sending a message to [email protected] indicating your attendance!
