The Harvard University Association of Alumni in Singapore (HUAAS) would like to invite its members to an evening with ESM Goh Chok Tong. In a moderated session, we will have ESM Goh share with Harvard alumni the following (and not restricted to):
|
- What inspired him to write his recently launched two-volume biography “Tall Order” and “Standing Tall”
- Key highlights in his corporate and political career
- Important lessons and values he would like to impart to our alumni
There will be a 30-minute Q&A session open to the floor after the moderated session with ESM Goh.

About ESM Goh Chok Tong:
ESM Goh Chok Tong is a former Singaporean politician, who served as Prime Minister of Singapore from 28 November 1990 to 12 August 2004 and secretary-general of the People's Action Party from November 1992 to December 2004. He was also a Member of Parliament representing Marine Parade for 44 years.
He was an improbable Prime Minister for an unlikely country. He had neither the connections nor the cunning to rise to the top and was even once famously derided by his mentor Lee Kuan Yew for being "wooden" in his communication skills. Except for an imposing height most unusual in this part of the world, he was an ordinary man. He lost his father at a young age, lived in a two-bedroom public flat with his mother and four siblings, and needed a government bursary to complete university.
Yet somehow, he succeeded and became Singapore’s second Prime Minister, and rose through a combination of strength, wit and a political nous which many, including himself, did not know he had. He was the man who first made Neptune Orient Lines, Singapore's national carrier, profitable, before entering politics. The stellar corporate stint was followed by his many novel policies and institutions that have since become household names in the country: Medisave, Total Defence, Residents' Committee, and Nominated Member of Parliament.
