SUMMARY:Trial by Fire - A Case Study on Leadership and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Ray Jefferson lost his hand to a grenade during military service with the U.S. special operations forces. Later in his career\, while working for President Barack Obama\, he was forced to quit public service because of false claims of ethical violations\, which were amplified in the New York Times and the Washington Post. Ray spent 8 years and his entire life savings to clear his name and received a full exoneration by the U.S. government and a de facto letter of apology. He then chose to return to public service via an appointment by President Joe Biden. \nThe HBS case on Ray’s story focuses on how do we\, as leaders\, remain resilient to overcome overwhelming adversity? It is currently being taught at HBS\, Harvard Kennedy School of Government\, Harvard Divinity School\, and Wharton Business School. Come join Ray and your fellow alumni in a closed-door session where he will share the story that’s the basis for the case followed by a Q&A session afterwards. We believe this will be a very special evening\, one that will leave us feeling inspired\, connected as a community\, and better prepared to deal with our own journeys of resilience. \nThe Chatham House Rule will apply to the event.  Due to the nature of the event and the discounts we have negotiated for the HBS case material\, this event will be exclusive to Harvard alumni.  We apologise in advance that we will not accept applications from non-Harvard alumni.  Any substitution you send due to last minute scheduling conflicts must be a Harvard alumni.  In addition\, dues-paying members will have priority in the event of oversubscription. \nIf you are not yet a dues-paying alumni\, sign up for membership here.   \n\nAbout Ray Jefferson \nRay is the President of Jefferson Group\, a Singapore-based global consultancy with a focus on the C-suite that provides customized leadership\, team\, and talent development services. Together with Kuo\, arguably Singapore’s most significant cultural figure\, Mr Sasitharan co-founded the Intercultural Theatre Institute (ITI)\, then called TTRP – the Theatre Training and Research Programme in 2000. With Kuo’s untimely death in 2002\, Mr Sasitharan took up the reins of the fledging institution and forged the development of a conservatory unique in the world of theatre training of actors because of its curriculum and pedagogy. ITI’s unique acting programme is characterised by its performer-centred\, practice-oriented training that emphasises intercultural work and original creation. It immerses students in classical theatre forms from Asia – such as Beijing Opera\, Kutiyattam\, Noh Theatre and Wayang Wong – and juxtaposes these intense interactions with Stanislavskian and post-Stanislavskian actor training techniques.\nMr Sasitharan is a recipient of the Cultural Medallion\, Singapore’s highest honour for artists\, in 2012 and a HCS Fellow Awardee in 2022. He is regarded by his peers and the larger arts community in Singapore as a teacher and thought leader\, who always stood for the independent and critical-minded artist\, eloquently speaking truth to power.\nHe holds a Master of Arts in Philosophy from the National University of Singapore (NUS). SUMMARY:Private Guided Tour of the “Manila Galleon: From Asia to the Americas” Exhibition at the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM)
DESCRIPTION:Manila Galleon explores a trade that connected Asia to the Americas and Europe. For centuries\, Spanish ships laden with porcelain\, silk\, spices\, and other goods sailed annually across the Pacific from Manila to Acapulco\, returning with millions of pieces of silver. \n  \nFeaturing over 140 extraordinary works of art from the 16th to 20th century\, the exhibition reveals how people\, goods\, and ideas circulating through the global port cities of Manila and Mexico City created a distinctive shared cultural and artistic heritage. Looking at Manila as a precursor of Singapore\, it reflects the unique qualities of Singapore’s own blended society and the important role port cities have played in artistic and cultural exchanges that shaped the world. \n  \nThis is a not-to-be missed exhibition and we are fortunate to have secured a specialist ACM docent\, Ms. Patricia Bjaaland Welch\, to give our alumni a personalised 1-hour guided tour of the exhibition. Harvard alumni and their family members are welcome. \nSpace is limited\, thus do sign up ASAP! More details of this special ACM exhibition here: https://www.nhb.gov.sg/acm/whats-on/exhibitions/manila-galleon-2023. \nDate: Saturday 17 February 2024\nTime: 10am till 11am\nAddress: Meet at Lobby of Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM)\, 1 Empress Place\, Singapore 179555\nACM Ticket Cost: Singaporeans/PE $12\, Others $25 \nDocent Bio \n  \nMs. Patricia Bjaaland Welch is a retired professional\, currently engaged in independent research\, writing and publishing articles\, educating docents\, students\, and anyone interested in Asian history and religion and its related arts. She later earned a business degree and worked in senior international marketing positions for a number of multinational companies\, which includes\, McKinsey & Co.\, Time Magazine Group\, ABN AMRO Bank\, Pearson (UK)\, and American Express until retiring to return to her original passion – Asian art history. \nSince then\, Ms. Welch has published three books: Chinese Art: A Guide to Motifs and Visual Imagery\, The Chinese New Year\, and A History of the Southeast Asian Ceramic Society and numerous papers.
