SUMMARY:Disrupting with Integrity: A Harvard Case Comes to Life
DESCRIPTION:What drives someone to leave a secure\, high-flying career to take on one of the hardest problems in one of the least understood markets—and try to build something entirely new? \n\n\n\nJoin us for an evening of insight and inspiration as part of the August Alumnus Series\, co-hosted by the Harvard Club of Singapore and the HBS Club of Singapore. We’re proud to feature Duncan van Bergen (MBA ’03)\, co-founder of Calyx Global\, in conversation with HBS Professor Mike Toffel—who authored the case study on Duncan now taught in classrooms at HBS. Duncan’s story has also been featured in HBS’s podcast\, Cold Call. \n\n\n\nThis won’t be just a story about carbon credits. It’s about values in action: \n\n\n\n\nHow do you build trust when the world around you hasn’t quite figured out the rules?\n\n\n\nCan you grow a business and still protect your principles? \n\n\n\nWhat does it take to walk away from comfort and toward contribution? \n\n\n\n\nThrough Duncan’s journey—from corporate leadership into the unknown—we’ll explore how seeing the world through a different lens can open unexpected doors. We’ll talk about building organizations that do good and do well\, confronting conflicts of interest with courage\, and why integrity still matters\, even when the stakes are high. \n\n\n\nFollowing the conversation\, Daniel Lee\, Associate Professor (Practice) in Carbon Markets at Nanyang Business School\, NTU and a seasoned practitioner who’s spent nearly two decades shaping climate finance and policy\, will guide an interactive case discussion—bringing attendees into the conversation and the dilemmas at its heart. \n\n\n\n🍷 Light dinner will be served🎓 All Harvard alumni are welcome. Guests who have been recommended by Harvard alumni are welcomed based on availability. \n\n\n\nThis is more than a case. It’s a chance to rethink what’s possible.Get your tickets soon—spaces are limited. \n\n\n\nImportant: Guests will be considered only if recommended by a Harvard alumnus and if capacity allows. Please make sure you are eligible for the ticket category you want to buy before you pay for tickets as they are not refundable. \n\n\n\nContact information – singapore@harvard.sg

SUMMARY:A Dermatologist’s Fight Against Human Trafficking: Launching the First Pro Bono Tattoo Removal Program at Harvard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an inspiring talk by Dr. Shadi Kourosh\, the founder of Harvard’s Pro Bono laser clinic and tattoo removal program—the first of its kind—dedicated to supporting survivors of human trafficking. \n\n\n\nYou might wonder\, what do tattoos have to do with human trafficking? Many traffickers and gangs brand their victims with tattoos to mark and control them. Dr. Kourosh’s innovative program helps remove these painful\, dangerous markers\, offering survivors a fresh start. \n\n\n\nHuman trafficking—which includes both labor and sex trafficking—affects people of all genders\, backgrounds\, and ages. A landmark study has found that 88% of trafficked survivors reported passing through the healthcare system unnoticed\, largely due to gaps in training and lack of treatment protocol. Dr. Kourosh’s work has led to the creation of an international task force that unites doctors\, NGOs\, the WHO\, and government agencies and the first international registry to recognise skin signs of trafficking. \n\n\n\nTattoo removal often requires many costly laser treatments\, making it inaccessible to most survivors. Harvard’s pro bono clinic has inspired dermatologists nationwide to volunteer their expertise. Dr. Kourosh has consolidated these efforts in a smartphone app called SSTEAR\, which also provides educational resources and a toolkit for healthcare workers who may encounter trafficking victims. In HCS’s inaugural virtual session\, Dr. Kourosh will share her journey in fighting against human trafficking and how we can work together to better identify trafficked victims and ultimately end this global crisis altogether. \n\n\n\nShadi Kourosh\, MD\, MPH\, is a board certified dermatologist and Associate Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School. Learn more about Dr. Kouroush’s work here: \n\n\n\nhttps://www.cfr.org/blog/shadi-kourosh-medical-community-efforts-identify-and-combat-human-trafficking \n\n\n\nhttps://www.thinkglobalhealth.org/article/health-care-frontline-defense-against-human-trafficking \n\n\n\nThis is a virtual session conducted via Zoom. Access details will be shared prior to the start of the event.

SUMMARY:Breakfast Discussion with Harvard Kennedy School’s Professor Asim I. Khwaja
DESCRIPTION:Come join Professor Asim I. Khwaja\, Director of the Harvard Center for International Development (CID)\, and Fatema Z. Sumar\, CID Executive Director\, for an engaging in-person breakfast fireside chat on “The Future of Global Development and Prosperity: A Discussion with Harvard Center for International Development Leadership”.This session will focus on how to close the global “potential gap” – the space between where people are and where they could be if given the right tools and opportunities. What if development was not just about reducing poverty but about helping every person thrive? In Asia\, for example\, economic prosperity has risen\, but it has not been felt evenly\, and many populations still fail to thrive. As the world grapples with rising inequality\, political fragility\, and a rapidly changing global economy\, the Harvard Center for International Development (CID) is leading a bold rethinking of what development means and how to achieve it.Both speakers will also share CID’s vision for building a thriving world for all by translating rigorous research into practical solutions that work for communities\, governments\, and global systems. From collaborating with policymakers to leveraging talent and data\, CID is pioneering a new model of development rooted in human potential\, not just poverty metrics. CID Global Development Council member Vikas Pershad (HKS MPP 2005) will moderate the discussion.Event Details:  \n\n\n\n• Date: Friday 11 July 2025• Time: 9.00am till 10.30am • Venue: Aura Group’s Board Room\, 1 Phillip Street\, Royal One Phillip\, Level 9\, Singapore 048692  (3mins walk from Raffles Place MRT station\, take exit B)• Pastries\, coffee\, tea and water will be provided \n\n\n\nWe only have 20 slots available on a first-come-first-serve basis and so please sign up only if you are certain to attend. About Professor Asim I. SUMMARY:A Guided Tour of Silent Voices – Still Life Paintings of Pierre Boncompain\, Ziad Dalloul and Denis Lage
DESCRIPTION:A Guided Tour of Silent Voices – Still Life Paintings of Pierre Boncompain\, Ziad Dalloul and Denis LagetCome join us for an exclusive and educational tour of “Silent Voices”\, an art exhibition co-presented by Alliance Française de Singapour and Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery\, that explores the enduring resonance of still life through the works of Pierre Boncompain\, Ziad Dalloul\, and Denis Laget. Once rooted in quiet observation\, the still life genre has evolved over centuries to reflect not only material abundance\, but also emotional depth\, formal experimentation\, and conceptual ideas.   Pierre Boncompain’s luminous compositions evoke the warmth of Mediterranean life\, blending Matisse-like simplicity with Bonnard’s harmonious palettes\, embodying his belief that “painting is creating silence”. Ziad Dalloul’s “nature silencieuse” transforms everyday objects into meditations on the intimate world of lived spaces\, expansive landscapes\, and the tension between stillness and change. Denis Laget draws from the vanitas tradition\, creating textured floral works that confront the fragility of beauty and the transience of life. Together\, their works reveal the timeless appeal of still life as a powerful medium for reflection and reinvention.   Join us for a guided tour by Ms Timmy Kam\, where she will help us to better understand and explore the unique voices of those three artists\, and how each of them redefines the still life genre in their own interesting way. This art exhibition\, which is also presented as part of vOilah! SUMMARY:The History of Singapore Forests
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that NParks conducts a census of these plots every five years? Or that Singapore’s forests contribute to global climate data collection efforts that are essential to measuring the health of Mother Earth? Are you interested in understanding what NParks has planned for our forests in the near future? \n\n\n\nIf you want to know the answers to any of these questions or just enjoy a moderately challenging hike\, you are all in for a treat! \n\n\n\nChuck Cannon (College ’88)\, Director\, Forest and Tree Research at the Singapore Botanic Gardens\, Singapore (NParks)\, has agreed to lead our nature lovers into the forests of the Bukit TImah Nature Reserve where some of the paths go across part of the long-term plots that were established back in the early 90’s. Chuck has been studying forests in southeast asia for a long\, long time\, and I keep telling him that he should lead one of those Harvard tours into one of the forests in these regions. Imagine finding a Rafflesia on a tour led by Chuck! \n\n\n\nThis is our first time trying out an event on Labour Day\, so we’ll see how this goes. \n\n\n\nWarning \n\n\n\nThe trails are narrow and some may find the hike to be moderately challenging. We’ll keep it to a small group and if there is enough interest\, I’m sure we can all convince Chuck to show us more of the parks in Singapore! \n\n\n\nWe are charging a minimum fee to ensure that folks show up as we expect this event to be oversubscribed if we advertise it to be free. Dues-paying members may bring up to 2 guests.
