SUMMARY:A Guided Tour of Silent Voices – Still Life Paintings of Pierre Boncompain\, Ziad Dalloul and Denis Lage
DESCRIPTION:A Guided Tour of Silent Voices – Still Life Paintings of Pierre Boncompain\, Ziad Dalloul and Denis LagetCome join us for an exclusive and educational tour of “Silent Voices”\, an art exhibition co-presented by Alliance Française de Singapour and Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery\, that explores the enduring resonance of still life through the works of Pierre Boncompain\, Ziad Dalloul\, and Denis Laget. Once rooted in quiet observation\, the still life genre has evolved over centuries to reflect not only material abundance\, but also emotional depth\, formal experimentation\, and conceptual ideas.   Pierre Boncompain’s luminous compositions evoke the warmth of Mediterranean life\, blending Matisse-like simplicity with Bonnard’s harmonious palettes\, embodying his belief that “painting is creating silence”. Ziad Dalloul’s “nature silencieuse” transforms everyday objects into meditations on the intimate world of lived spaces\, expansive landscapes\, and the tension between stillness and change. Denis Laget draws from the vanitas tradition\, creating textured floral works that confront the fragility of beauty and the transience of life. Together\, their works reveal the timeless appeal of still life as a powerful medium for reflection and reinvention.   Join us for a guided tour by Ms Timmy Kam\, where she will help us to better understand and explore the unique voices of those three artists\, and how each of them redefines the still life genre in their own interesting way. This art exhibition\, which is also presented as part of vOilah! SUMMARY:Private Guided Tour of the “Manila Galleon: From Asia to the Americas” Exhibition at the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM)
DESCRIPTION:Manila Galleon explores a trade that connected Asia to the Americas and Europe. For centuries\, Spanish ships laden with porcelain\, silk\, spices\, and other goods sailed annually across the Pacific from Manila to Acapulco\, returning with millions of pieces of silver. \n  \nFeaturing over 140 extraordinary works of art from the 16th to 20th century\, the exhibition reveals how people\, goods\, and ideas circulating through the global port cities of Manila and Mexico City created a distinctive shared cultural and artistic heritage. Looking at Manila as a precursor of Singapore\, it reflects the unique qualities of Singapore’s own blended society and the important role port cities have played in artistic and cultural exchanges that shaped the world. \n  \nThis is a not-to-be missed exhibition and we are fortunate to have secured a specialist ACM docent\, Ms. Patricia Bjaaland Welch\, to give our alumni a personalised 1-hour guided tour of the exhibition. Harvard alumni and their family members are welcome. \nSpace is limited\, thus do sign up ASAP! More details of this special ACM exhibition here: https://www.nhb.gov.sg/acm/whats-on/exhibitions/manila-galleon-2023. \nDate: Saturday 17 February 2024\nTime: 10am till 11am\nAddress: Meet at Lobby of Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM)\, 1 Empress Place\, Singapore 179555\nACM Ticket Cost: Singaporeans/PE $12\, Others $25 \nDocent Bio \n  \nMs. Patricia Bjaaland Welch is a retired professional\, currently engaged in independent research\, writing and publishing articles\, educating docents\, students\, and anyone interested in Asian history and religion and its related arts. She has a degree in Chinese from the University of Oslo (Norway) and an M.A. in Asian Studies from Boston University\, where she was a lecturer in her early years. She later earned a business degree and worked in senior international marketing positions for a number of multinational companies\, which includes\, McKinsey & Co.\, Time Magazine Group\, ABN AMRO Bank\, Pearson (UK)\, and American Express until retiring to return to her original passion – Asian art history. \nSince then\, Ms. Welch has published three books: Chinese Art: A Guide to Motifs and Visual Imagery\, The Chinese New Year\, and A History of the Southeast Asian Ceramic Society and numerous papers. Ms. Welch leads study groups to little-known destinations in China\, lecture on cruise ships in Asian waters\, and is a senior docent and docent trainer in the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM)\, Singapore. Ceramics is one of her passions and she was President of the Southeast Asian Ceramic Society and still continues to serve on its council. \n  \nMs. Welch was born in the United States\, but has lived extensively in Norway and Hong Kong\, and currently resides in Bangkok and Singapore. She also spent a semester as a student at Tokyo’s Sophia University in the 1980s. \n
