Guo Pei is China’s leading couturière – high fashion designer and dressmaker. Elements of the historical appear in Guo Pei’s contemporary designs, sometimes retaining their meanings, sometimes adapted to suit her desires. Every Guo Pei dress tells a story – about legends and fairytales, imperial culture, nature, even life itself. Her designs reflect her Beijing childhood, overseas experiences, and ideas about art. Each new collection is an opportunity for her to push the boundaries of craftsmanship.
This exhibition explores 29 Guo Pei creations juxtaposed with artworks from the Asian Civilisations Museum. The juxtapositions invite visitors to consider how contemporary Chinese fashion has roots in traditional Chinese art.
Exploring Guo Pei’s impact on everyday lives beyond the runway, her exquisite Chinese bridal gowns – including two directly inspired by artworks in the Peranakan Museum – are also displayed.
Restaurants at ACM, Prive and EMPRESS, will be offering visitors (who have purchased Guo Pei tickets), a 10% discount off ala-carte menu items.
