Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Annual Dinner
March 29 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm SMTFree – $1000
The Harvard University Association of Alumni in Singapore (HUAAS) would like to invite you to its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Annual Dinner to be held at Hotel Equarius, Resorts World Sentosa on Friday 29 March 2019.
The Annual Dinner is open to all HUAAS members and guests, but only HUAAS members can attend and vote at the AGM.
Our Guest of Honour for the Annual Dinner will be Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic and Social Policies. He obtained a Master in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School in 1989, where he was named a Lucius N Littauer Fellow.
Tharman is also Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), Singapore’s central bank and financial regulator. Tharman was appointed Chairman of the Group of Thirty, an independent global council of leading economic and financial policy-makers, from Jan 2017, succeeding Jean-Claude Trichet. In Apr 2017, he was appointed as Chairman of the G20 Eminent Persons Group on Global Financial Governance, to review the system of multilateral financial institutions. He had previously been appointed by his international peers as Chairman of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC), the key policy forum of the IMF, for an extended period of four years from 2011; he was its first Asian chair.
Besides having one of our favourite and most esteemed government leaders honour us with his attendance, this Annual Dinner will hold two special firsts.
The first special feature in this Annual Dinner will be the inauguration of our first HUAAS Fellow. The HUAAS Fellow is our version of something akin to the Commencement Speaker at Harvard University, whom our alma mater awards an Honorary Doctorate to. In this case, the HUAAS Fellow Award is given to a person selected by HUAAS (as represented by its elected Committee), whose merits include achievements, qualities, values, virtues and scholarship that best reflect the values of Harvard University. This Award also focuses on Harvard’s motto Veritas, excellence and leadership, merits and virtues that best reflect the highest ethos of what HUAAS stands for and wishes to recognise and honour in the Awardee.
Like a Commencement Speaker, the HUAAS Fellow will be giving an address to our Annual Dinner attendees. We hope to start a new tradition, in which an Awardee whose selection our members and even the public will look forward to anticipating every year.
We have the privilege to announce, in advance of our third Annual Dinner, that our Inaugural HUAAS Fellow is Dr. Noeleen Heyzer, social scientist and former UN Under-Secretary-General (her profile at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noeleen_Heyzer). We all look forward to hearing Dr. Heyzer’s address at our Annual Dinner!
Another first at our forthcoming Annual Dinner on 29 March 2019 will be the introduction of 6 of our 24 Harvard Prize Book (Singapore) 2018 recipients. One of them will be selected to address us briefly as well.
The Harvard Prize Book has been presented annually to deserving high school students since 1910 by Harvard Alumni Clubs and Associations. Students from nearly 2,000 high schools all over the world are recipients of the Prize Book, including the US, the UK, China, Taiwan, India, Croatia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. This Harvard Prize Book (Singapore) 2018 is a new initiative of our Singapore Harvard Chapter.
